Environmental Management System

Environmental Management Systems are a framework for managing an organisation’s impact on the environment. An EMS will help your organisation improve its green credentials, environmental performance and enjoy improved business reputation.  EMS include ISO 14001, BS 8555, Acorn and EMAS (European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme).

ISO14001

ISO 14001 is the international standard for Environmental Management Systems. It is a globally recognised standard that demonstrates your commitment to environmentally friendly actions and boosts your green credentials.

PeopleProfitPlanet will work with you to achieve ISO 14001, from assessment, training right through to certification. The benefits of this environmental accreditation include:

  • Significant cost savings through resource efficiency
  • Massive reduction in your business carbon footprint
  • Increased reputation as an environmentally friendly company
  • Demonstrates your environmental commitment to stakeholders and customers
  • Opens up new business channels through being a green supplier and partner
  • Better management of environmental risks

Your commitment to ISO 14001 proves that your organisation is actively working to prevent pollution, comply with current legislation and continually work to improve the EMS. These three criteria will audited by the NQA and who will confirm and verify the ISO 14001 standard.

BS 8555

BS8555 is the British standard based on the international standard ISO 14001. It provides a clear structure for companies to evaluate and reduce environmental impacts and BS 8555 can lead to further Environmental standards like ISO 14001 or EMAS (European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme). BS 8555 is accessible to small and large companies and is administered by the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).

Achieving BS 8555 will be invaluable for companies seeking environmentally friendly companies within the supply chain and will greatly increase your organisation’s Green Credentials.

There are six stages to achieving BS 8555. They can be performed at the pace of the company with no time limit. The flexibility of this course makes it ideal for businesses who strive for an effective environmental management system.

  1. Establishing a commitment and baseline. This may involve senior management staff and other influencers to approve the project and engage in environmental awareness.
  2. Identifying and ensuring compliance with legal and other requirements. This is standard procedure for ensuring that your organisation meet all legal requirements.
  3. Developing objectives,  targets and programmes. This involves finalising an environmental policy.
  4. Implementing the Environmental Management System. Roles and responsibilities are assigned.
  5. Checking, audit and review. Internal audit procedures are implemented and results are fed back to the management.
  6. Celebrate! EMS acknowledgement (and a head start to achieving ISO 14001 or EMAS standard) Assessment and review of how the process has been implemented in your organisation.
