Prince taking the lead

Although his son has been hogging the headlines recently, Prince Charles has a high profile in the sustainability world.  Back in the 90s, Prince Charles got himself a reputation for ‘talking to the plants’ and wasn’t necessarily taken too seriously, but his love of our environment is now helping the green cause.

Our next monarch is known for attaching his name to many good causes.  One which he is particularly passionate about are those such as the ‘May Day’ network run by BITC, of which PeopleProfitPlanet are members.  You may also have heard that he went on a tour of the UK in the late summer to highlight sustainability issues in the Royal train, which was appropriately powered by bio-diesel.

Furthermore he held a 10 day mini-festival at Clarence House in London called ‘Start UK’ which highlighted a whole raft of issues, from saving energy to recycling and from saving water to travel.

You might not have heard that Prince Charles recently got himself into Vogue Magazine for his views on fashion.  This is because he is supporting ‘earth-friendly’ fashion in the form of vintage clothing, ‘upcycling’ (which is the art of reusing unwanted items by converting them into something better: www.upcycling.co.uk) and use of natural materials if these aren’t possible.

The prince was quoted as saying that “Fashion clearly makes people feel good, but now it has to do the world good, too.”   Examples of this are his favourite winter coat, tailored by Saville Row 23 years ago, and a pair of “totally indestructible” shoes made from 18th century leather.

The British Monarchy has been a particularly resilient institution so it is heartening to see that their next ‘leader’ is so committed to protecting our environment.
