Successful Green Champions

A particularly successful area for PeopleProfitPlanet recently has been the many Green Champion programmes we have run with large and small organisations in many different sectors. Examples of recent clients are: Mason Clarke Structural Engineers, NHS East Riding of Yorkshire, Parcelforce (see other article), Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, Southeastern Railway, Teesside University Students’ Union, and Thornton & Ross.

DEVELOPING SKILLS

Adam Woodhall, Head Trainer and Founder of PPP comments:

“These programmes have been developed to help motivate the green champions, who are usually volunteers, give them new knowledge and develop their skills. The skills they learn are twofold: influencing and prioritisation. Many of the Champions are passionate about being green, which is essential for the role, however that can sometimes lead to them coming across as being eco-police or even eco-evangelicals.”

“PPP work with the champions to help them become great green influencers so they are able to how they convince colleagues to do their bit to help to help the environment. The Champions also prioritise the actions they can take so understand what is realistic in the short, medium and long term, which leads to the effective roll-out environmental initiatives to their area.”

MOTIVATION

“It is well known that people learn better and retain more when they are enjoying themselves, so “

we always inject humour and interactivity into the sessions. Activities such as the brainstorming game ‘Carbon Bingo’ ensure that the staff go away having received a great morale boost, having learnt a lot and feeling highly motivated to help green their colleagues and site.”

ENGAGE AND EMBED

“In the workshops we are developing the skills and motivation of the Champions. It is also critical that they are engaged before the workshops and then the good behaviours and practices are embedded afterwards. Therefore we work with the client to promote the training internally. Then after the event we continue to communicate with the Champions, both via emails, conference calls and face-to-face meetings. All of this work leads to excellent results for both the organisations people and profit as well as benefiting our planet.”
