Chief execs see sustainability on the horizon, but struggle to put it into practice

The UN has recently released a report on the opinions of 766 CEO’s across the world on sustainability.  It demonstrates that progressing on their green journey is important to them, but that they are struggling to grasp how to implement it.  More than half of the chief execs feel challenged by the practicalities of implementing environmental, social and governance values across the business model.

72% of those interviewed cited “brand, trust and reputation” as a driver for their desire to build their sustainability. They are optimistic for the long term future as 80% of chief executives believe sustainability will be “fully integrated across their global business” in 10 to 15 years’ time.  Other interesting findings in the report were that chief executives were found to be more complacent in Europe and the US than their peers in other areas of the world.

The report’s author, Peter Lacy, observed that CEOs are suffering the internal conflict of having “one foot in the future, one foot in the present.”

These findings demonstrate that leaders recognise that sustainability is vital to their organisation, but they also realise that the steps ahead are not clear. Supporting the leadership of organisations, large and small, public and private on their green journey is probably the most important area of PeopleProfitPlanet’s service offering. Our new ‘People Driven Carbon Efficiency Programme’ (highlighted in another article) has been developed with just this challenge in mind: how the leadership and their whole organisation are involved in creating their green future.
